A special perspective
Why the Berlin Cathedral looks special from the water
Millions of tourists see the cathedral every year from the Lustgarten. From the water, a different perspective emerges: the dome above the Spree, its reflection in the river, the direct view of the apse. While you quietly take in this view from the ship, our live guide tells the story of the building, the Hohenzollern crypt inside, and why the dome was missing for almost 20 years after the war.
Clear view of the cathedral
On land, the Berlin Cathedral is often surrounded by tourist groups, construction fences, and traffic signs. From the water, you have an unobstructed view of the dome, the apse, and the sculptures on the roof. Particularly impressive photos can be taken directly at the pier and in the first few minutes of the tour.
Background information from the live guide
Our live guide explains details about the Cathedral that are often not found in guidebooks: why Kaiser Wilhelm II considered the original building too small, what the Hohenzollern crypt with 95 coffins is, and why today's dome is lower than the original. Live on board, without canned audio.
The lower dome
Today's cathedral is 16 meters lower than the pre-war building. After its destruction in 1944 and the GDR reconstruction starting in 1975, the dome was deliberately designed to be smaller. From the water, it is recognizable by the clear lines of the current structure.
95 Hohenzollern in the crypt
Beneath the Cathedral lies the Hohenzollern Crypt – one of Europe's most significant dynastic burial sites. It contains 95 coffins, including those of Frederick I and the Great Elector. Not visible from the water, but described by our guide.
Wilhelm's claim
Kaiser Wilhelm II wanted an Evangelical counterpart to St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Between 1894 and 1905, the cathedral was built over the significantly smaller previous structure. The size of the building in the urban area is particularly evident from the water.
